Bandung is well known as a creative city. There are hundreds of contemporary and traditional art and design exhibitions. It's a perfect place to incubate creativity for the young generation. There are many art schools in Bandung as well as art studios and galleries to exhibit artworks. The most famous is Selasar Sunaryo Art Space named after well known Indonesian artist. Selasar Sunaryo has achieved a big name in the art community in Indonesia and got recognized at the International level too. He is not just a successful artist but a generous man too: he participates and contributes to the art community in Indonesia spreading his knowledge through a residency program for local artists.
One of the programs in Selasar Sunaryo Art Space is a residency program for Indonesian artists that's called Transit. The concept of the program is to invite and guide a local art-worker to become an artist. The result of this event is truly surprising. Before entering the program an artist has already mastered the skill of painting but just landscape for sale in the street. After the residency program, the artwork transforms into contemporary art with a conceptual core. The program is annually and lasts 2-months.
You can see and learn participating artists' transformation of artwork before and after their attendance to the residency program provided by Selasar Sunaryo Art Space. In Sunaryo hand those talented artists get polished into the contemporary level of artists. Their exhibitions are astonishing and touching the audience. Their artworks show the personality. In the guide of Sunaryo, they find themself in their artworks. He is a brilliant mentor giving space to the local artist to grow in their own way.

What is Jelekong and why the residency takes place in there? Jelekong is one of the regions in Bandung, the painting center, more than 600 painters live there. Surrounding by nature, it has been inspiring artists to paint mountains, rice fields, rivers, and jungles for centuries.

The artwork displayed below illustrates how the artist writes the letter through his father's cloth in order to express personal experience. Such a beautiful and meaningful feeling has been pictured in this artwork. Nostalgia with the original medium of the concept. In-depth of the conceptual message that the artist wants to deliver to the audience.

These two pictures above are my favorites paintings. I like the way how the artist represents the pop culture from the Indonesian perspective using urban legends topped up with exaggeration, metaphors, standing out colors that make you easily see the main idea of the painting.

There are so many talented artists around Indonesia. The high cost of art education in Indonesia makes it hard. They really need a guide from a maestro like the Sunaryo level to enter and be welcomed in the contemporary art world.
I hope this residency program will keep move forward and grow a lot of talented artists around Indonesia. Salute for Selasar Sunaryo and the team.
